Protect the appearance that sets your product apart.

A distinctive shape, pattern or ornamentation can become a powerful differentiator. Industrial design registration provides exclusive rights over that visual appearance.

What Is an Industrial Design?

Protecting what appeals to the eye.

A registered design protects the aesthetic appearance of an article — its shape, configuration, pattern, ornamentation, composition of lines or colours, and surface features. Protection applies only to aesthetic aspects, not technical functionality.

The design must be new and original, not previously published anywhere in the world, distinctive in appearance, and capable of being applied to an article through an industrial process.

What Cannot Be Protected

Functional features or mechanical principles

Methods of construction or technical innovations

Trade marks

Artistic works protected exclusively by copyright

Designs lacking novelty or originality

Where protection is needed for technical innovation, patent protection may be more appropriate.
